Kelps represent the largest species of algae in the world, with some, like the giant kelp, exceeding 100 feet (30 meters) in length. Giant kelp is also one of the fastest-growing organisms in the ocean, growing up to 2 ft per day! Gas-filled bladders beneath the kelp’s blades, called pneumatocysts, float the kelp towards the water’s surface, while the holdfasts keep them anchored in place, creating the iconic forest-like appearance.

They support commercially and culturally important fisheries, protect coastlines from erosion, and support a large ecotourism industry.

Unfortunately, warming seas, loss of keystone species that keep kelp grazers in check, unsustainable fishing practices, and pollution are causing kelp forests to decline globally.

Dr. Jennifer Smith and her team of post-docs, graduate students, researchers, and volunteers study the biology and ecology of kelp to better understand and protect the species and ecosystem it creates. Currently, they are examining the effects of thermal stress at the cellular and organismal levels of various kelp species in hopes of identifying genetic variants that may help kelp be more resilient on our warming planet. Thermally resilient individuals will be stored in a living seed bank for restoration efforts in areas that may be exposed to marine heat waves in the future.
