Advocate Apparel Inspired by Abalone

Abalone is the common name for a variety of marine snails that are found throughout the world’s oceans. Sought after for their meat and their beautiful shells, populations have declined rapidly and some species are now critically endangered.

Our relationship with abalone illustrates the challenges of overexploitation of the marine environment. Until the 1980s, it was widely thought that abalone populations were resilient and could effectively rebound from harvesting activities. Unfortunately, that has not proven to be true.

Abalone are “broadcast spawners,” meaning that two individuals must be within three feet of one another to sexually reproduce. This type of reproduction makes population recovery very challenging, driving the need for humans to intervene.

“Our partnership with Waterlust helps us spread our message of conservation across the globe far beyond our reach.  It is a great example of how one small organization with one employee can only do so much but by working together we can do more, reach more, spreading knowledge, happiness, beauty, and hopefully compassion for our ocean animals.”

Waterlust is waterSILK

Putting on my leggings is like sliding into a soft cloud of silk except no silk worms were needed. Can’t believe these leggings are made from recycled plastic. They are sewn very well and move with my body beautifully. I highly recommend them and I enjoy supporting the Waterlust team, one and all.

This is my second pair. I loved my first pair so much that I had to have another. Great construction, gorgeous fabric, functional pockets, durable and comfy!!

Love these swim leggings!

These are the best! Beautiful pattern, so comfortable, both wet and dry. I don't need sunscreen for my legs anymore! I'll be ordering another pair in a different pattern soon! 5'4", 140 lbs, medium fits great.

Loved it!

These are my favorite tights. I love the pockets. And they last twice as long as other brands I’ve purchased.

Almost Perfect

I’ve wanted these leggings for over a year and finally went for it, and the two matching tops, a couple weeks ago. The material, length, and overall design are amazing. My two issues were nearly a dealbreaker though and I exchanged them for a different size hoping the problems would be solved in a different pair but they seem to be universal issues. First, the waistband is constantly rolling down! Doesn’t matter if you size up, the band will roll down. I’m going to try sewing a grip tape inside but be warned if you plan on moving at all while wearing these. I wore them to yoga and never stopped adjusting them. Exchanged them and went to another fitness class and exact same thing. Incredibly distracting. And second, and this might be design specific, the abalone shell design along the seams is a mirror image. So the seam along the crotch and backside create distinctive, highlighted, symmetrical images that look exactly like the parts of your anatomy these leggings are meant to cover. I’m still on the fence about returning or keeping these and trying to decide if sewing in alterations myself and finding a way to cover the backside are worth the money for a beautiful pair of leggings.
