Stony corals are essential reef-builders that form the foundation and framework for coral reef ecosystems. They do this by using calcium and carbonate ions in seawater to create limestone skeletons like the one this print is inspired by. These structures are home to some of the most biologically diverse habitats on Earth and help protect coastal communities from storms and hurricanes.

Coral reefs are critical underwater ecosystems that host and support a dazzling array of marine life and play a vital role in protecting coastlines from erosion, supporting fisheries, and driving tourism. These vibrant and biodiverse habitats are essential for maintaining the health of our oceans and sustaining both marine and human communities. Protecting coral reefs is key to safeguarding the balance of life in our oceans and ensuring a sustainable future.
The most significant problem facing coral reefs is black and white: climate change.
Climate change is exerting devastating impacts on coral reefs, primarily through rising sea temperatures and ocean acidification. Elevated sea temperatures lead to coral bleaching, where corals expel their symbiotic algae, causing them to lose their vibrant colors and leaving the corals weak and susceptible to diseases. Additionally, increased atmospheric carbon dioxide levels are driving ocean acidification, which hinders the ability of corals to build their calcium carbonate skeletons. These combined stressors make corals more susceptible to diseases and hinder their ability to recover from physical damage, posing a significant threat to these vital marine ecosystems and the rich biodiversity they support.
Rescue a Reef was developed in 2015 to raise public awareness and action on coral conservation through educational and experiential activities. This includes hosting citizen science field expeditions led by UM coral researchers that provide a unique, hands-on opportunity for recreational SCUBA divers and snorkelers to participate directly!
Through these citizen science expeditions, participants learn about the critical role coral reefs play in our environment and economy, threats they face, and tools available for their conservation and recovery; all the while conducting real-world coral research.
Our Rescue a Reef team is incredibly grateful for all the awareness and support Waterlust raises through the Coral Conservation print products! Corals are critical reef-builders and the bedrock of healthy oceans so we are thrilled this print embodies that. With your help, we can conserve and restore their future!

Coral Conservation Leggings
No review as of yet. It’s a Christmas present for my daughter
Size S for just under 95 lb petite woman fits great. Plenty long to fit around my heels under flippers. Sturdy - made to last. Good sun protection + added warmth & they look really nice. I'm a snorkeling senior happy to find these & support Waterlust.
Initially I really liked this legging except I wish the seams in the crotch area were covered as this suit becomes uncomfortable and scratchy due to exposed and raised seaming. This would be an easy fix in the design. I like the attractiveness of the suit and overall it's okay for swimming and for water aerobics. I just wish it was better designed in this one area because I have decided not to buy any more of these. I am a stage III melanoma survivor and the UPF was one of the deciding factors for buying this item.
