Known for the psychedelic patterns found on their inner shells, abalone (sea snails) feature unique colors that are created by nacre, hexagonal platelets of aragonite also known commonly as “mother of pearl” and found on a variety of mollusks. Our print features the piercing blues of New Zealand’s Pāua, the Māori name given to three species Haliotis iris, Haliotis australis and Haliotis virginea.

Abalone is the common name for a variety of marine snails that are found throughout the world’s oceans. Sought after for their meat and their beautiful shells, populations have declined rapidly and some species are now critically endangered.
Growing juvenile abalone. Once they reach adulthood, they’ll be released into the wild along southern California’s coast.
High school student divers trained by Nancy to participate in the abalone restoration efforts.
The next generation of scientists measuring abalone in their classroom nursery.
Our relationship with abalone illustrates the challenges of overexploitation of the marine environment. Until the 1980s, it was widely thought that abalone populations were resilient and could effectively rebound from harvesting activities. Unfortunately, that has not proven to be true.
Abalone are “broadcast spawners,” meaning that two individuals must be within three feet of one another to sexually reproduce. This type of reproduction makes population recovery very challenging, driving the need for humans to intervene.
Get Inspired is a non-profit organization that specializes in marine conservation & education, founded by Marine Biologist Nancy Caruso. Besides physically growing juvenile abalone along California’s coast and populating them back into the coastal kelp forest marine habitat, Nancy recognizes that protecting the ocean in the future requires educating children today. That is why she has launched a 10-year initiative to grow 100,000 abalone in classrooms across the golden state and restore them along the southern California coast, inspiring and utilizing the help of the next generation of scientists along the way. 10% of profits from your purchase will be donated to this restoration effort.
“Our partnership with Waterlust helps us spread our message of conservation across the globe far beyond our reach. It is a great example of how one small organization with one employee can only do so much but by working together we can do more, reach more, spreading knowledge, happiness, beauty, and hopefully compassion for our ocean animals.”

I ordered the shorts for my daughter. She was totally excited with the colors and the material. Fit perfectly with an
XXL. So, it's better to order a size up if you are a little heavy. The side pockets are deep and fantastic. She was very impressed. No problem with the exchange at all. Excellent company.
These are the most comfortable swim shorts I've ever worn! They look just like in the pictures. The print is GORGEOUS, the material sturdy but flexible, and the pockets are a delightful convenience. My only wish is that the waistband where a leeeeetle bit higher and a little bit sturdier, to help wrangle my muffin top a little more comfortably, but really that's a minor complaint.
I love the design it is stunning. Not sure if these run small or if they do not have the stretch-ability that comparable shorts have due to the type of fabric used. Either way, i wear a medium to large shorts and the large is tight. Love the shorts and the purpose.
Even prettier in person, love the pocket, the length and fit are comfortable and exactly what I was looking for. Surpassed my expectations, and I can't wait to use them more on warmer days!
The shorts in the 8 inch length is so great because the fabric does not rise up! I wish every print came in 8 inch length!
My abalone shorts are gorgeous and I can wear them both in and out of the water. They go well with many different tops. If you ever make a top that is a full zip front with long sleeves in this pattern I'll get that too. I also bought the tiger shark pants as a birthday gift for a young woman who has loved sharks since she was a child, and she loved it!
