Intimidating stripes cover one of the ocean’s largest apex predators. Sitting atop the marine food pyramid, tiger sharks play a significant roll in balancing the tropical and temperate water ecosystem, which is why we celebrate their beauty and support research that informs management of their population.

Tiger sharks are classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as “Near Threatened”, and thus, research, education and outreach is essential to ensuring healthy populations. As one of the ocean’s largest predators, these critical species sit at the top of the food chain, helping to regulate the delicate balance of populations of those beneath in the ecosystem. Decreased populations can result in trophic cascades, impacting the abundance and behavior of other species lower on the food chain.

Multiple research methods have shown that some species of sharks have declined in population by 90% or more during the last several decades in areas where they were formerly abundant. These declines are due to direct targeting in commercial fisheries, mostly for their fins and sometimes meat. Additionally, sharks are often caught unintentionally as bycatch in many other fisheries, caught and killed in some recreational fisheries (unlike catch and release), and may also be impacted by humans more indirectly through threats like habitat loss, pollution, and human-driven declines in the fish species sharks rely on for food.
Directed by Dr. Neil Hammerschlag, the Shark Research & Conservation Program (SRC) at the University of Miami conducts cutting-edge shark research while also inspiring scientific literacy and environmental ethic in youth through unique hands-on field research experiences.
Every year, SRC brings out thousands of people, mostly school-children, on their research boats to survey, sample, tag and study sharks. Opportunities are especially made available for under-served populations in the sciences.
SRC’s science focuses broadly on understanding the effects of environmental change on the behavioral ecology and conservation biology of sharks in a human‐altered world.
"We are so proud of our collaboration with Waterlust. Not only does their support help enable our shark conservation research, but the apparel itself is a walking billboard for marine conservation. I love it when people on the street stop to ask me about my tiger shark board shorts. It's an opportunity to start a conversation about the wonders and perils faced by sharks and how the average person can help make a difference.”

Loved this kept me from jelly stings
Love this! Beautiful design and awesome quality. I’m hooked! 🤩
I can never wear one pieces due to my long torso. I reached out to customer with an inquiry about sizing and length, and Laura was super helpful and informative. Originally I ordered the whale shark (because many prints were out of stock) and it fit well, but I found the print to be unflattering. Customer service helped me with exchanging for a different print (tiger shark), and I love it…very flattering!!! Due to my torso length, it’s slightly cheeky on me, but most bottoms seem cut that way anymore, so it doesn’t bother me. I haven’t used it in the water yet, so that the only reason I haven’t given 5 stars.
I have 6 other sunsuits from Waterlust and I love them all - they perform perfectly in water, provide excellent sun protection, and are superior in quality across the board - design, material, and manufacturing - bar none. The Tigershark print is very flattering and beautiful. I hesitated in the past on purchasing because I thought the print may be too drab, but I was wrong - it’s so interesting and the variation in color is beautiful - just like the Tigershark. My only critique would be the arm length is at least 2 inches too long for me. I’m 5’4” and have found this the case with all my WL sunsuits. I take my sunsuits to the tailor and have them resized which is kind of pricey since they basically remove the sleeve from the forearm and cut below the elbow, slim it down and reattach (there are quite a few intricate seams below the elbow for the thumbhole). Until WL offers “short” sizing, this is an additional expense I’m willing to incur for such a quality product.
Hi Sheriane! Wow! We love the dedication and are thrilled to hear that you love your suits so much! We'll take another look at the sleeve length across all the sizes and see if it might make sense to shorten them a bit. We really appreciate this feedback!
I am 5'5", 175lbs and I bought a medium. I was truly amazed by the durability and thickness of this swimsuit! Thickness puts it in between a regular swimsuit and a wetsuit. It feels amazing and is clearly very well made. My only very, very small thing I would mention is that I have a very short torso. The outside seams on the swimsuit feel like they could be taken in at most 1.5" (at most!). Other than the length being ever so slightly too long, I would recommend this swimsuit and brand to anyone. To those doubting the price, it well worth the money!
Perfect fit, beautiful design, got here faster than I expected.
