Advocate Apparel Inspired by the Peacock Mantis Shrimp

The peacock mantis shrimp is a strikingly colorful and highly predatory marine crustacean found in the Indo-Pacific region. Its body is typically about 10 cm (4 inches) long and it has club-like appendages that it uses to smash and kill prey. These smashing appendages have the fastest strike in the animal kingdom, with an acceleration faster than a .22 caliber bullet.

In addition to its powerful smashers, the peacock mantis shrimp has impressive visual abilities, with 12 color receptors (compared to humans' 3) and the ability to perceive polarized light. Color and polarized light signals are thought to play a big part in mantis shrimp behavior especially communication with other mantis shrimp.

The peacock mantis shrimp is named for its vibrant coloring, which can include startling shades of green, blue, and orange. It lives in burrows in coral reefs and feeds on a variety of prey, including crabs, mollusks, and small fish. Unfortunately, the corals they call home are losing their vibrant color due to increasing bleaching events.

“Waterlust and CoralWatch have teamed up to help preserve coral reefs and their colorful inhabitants for future generations to see. Mantis shrimps have been watching over the reef for millions of years. By supporting our cause, by wearing the fabulous Mantis Moxie water-garb Waterlust provides, and by learning more about the reef through the CoralWatch citizen science program, you can help watch over the reef too.”

Great material but a slight sizing issue

I followed the size chart and got a S (32DD). It is just a little too snug, so I might be more of an M. It would probably be fine for yoga or calmer activities, but it's a little risky for swimming in.
The fabric is soft and good thickness, and the pattern is gorgeous! I love the overall product and will probably end up trying an M in another pattern to see what's best.

Not unless you’re proud of your abs ;-(

I’be tried the leggings and sun suit combo and liked them (in another pattern) but thought the Peacock Mantis design was really dynamic. The leggings looked great on me. Unfortunately the only available top is the bra top. I order one size up from the size chart suggested size and still just about dislocated my shoulders to get it on and off. There was a 2” gap between the bottom of the top and the top of the leggings. My pasty muffin waist just oozed out and looked ghastly (Yikes!). I can’t wet this in public. Haven’t decided whether to return or alter with some additional material. I tried my other rash guards, but they all clash with the Mantis print. I wish they offered a sun suit or rash guard shirt to go with the leggings.

Hi Chris,

I am so sorry to hear you aren't feeling comfortable in your new gear! Our reversible tops are not meant to provide coverage over the mid section, but we do have wonderful Sun Shirts that provide that type of coverage! We are also hoping to add a sun suit to the Mantis Moxie collection in the near future.

Your note actually made us realize the picture of our wonderful model Kela wearing her Mantis Shrimp leggings with the Sea Glass sun shirt was not on our leggings page. So we have now added it, thank you! We think these two items pair really nicely together and may be an option you would feel more comfortable in. I have linked it here so you can check it out: https://waterlust.com/collections/womens-sun-shirts/products/sea-glass-blue-womens-sun-shirt?variant=

Please feel free to reach out to us at hello@waterlust.com if you have any other questions or concerns about your gear or would like help navigating the returns/exchanges system.
