Characteristic spots and stripes adorn the largest fish in the sea forming an intricate pattern, like a warrior painted for battle. Scientists use these distinctive markings to identify individual whale sharks. Like a fingerprint, each is as unique and special as the last.

Whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) are fish, not whales - allowing them to hold the esteemed title of "largest fish in the sea" (since sharks are fish too!). These charismatic creatures can reach lengths of 12 meters (40 feet) or more! Despite their large size, they feed on some of the smallest organisms in the sea, plankton. Hanging vertically in the water column they're able to suction feed and filter these tiny organisms through their gill rakers much like a giant vacuum cleaner pulls dust and dirt from a kitchen floor, filtering the fragments into its chamber within.
Unfortunately, approximately 100 million sharks are killed every year by humans, through direct targeted fishing efforts as well as unintended bycatch from other fisheries. The whale shark is one species of shark that is particularly vulnerable to this commercial fishing due to their high value in international trade, in addition to their highly migratory nature and normally low abundance. Research into the lives of these gentle giants can help us to manage their populations and keep these magnificent fish in the ocean where they belong.
The Marine Megafauna Foundation is helping to shed light on the population structure, migratory patterns, and the conservation requirements of these threatened sharks. Created in 2009, they aim to research, protect and conserve the large populations of marine megafauna (large marine species) found along the Mozambican coastline. Almost all whale sharks encountered by divers are juveniles and most are males. Where the school-bus-sized mature sharks swim, what they eat, and where the females give birth has long been a mystery, however their team is now very close to making these discoveries. 5% of sales from your purchase will go to the Marine Megafauna Foundation for satellite tags that are needed to track the movements of these large female whale sharks.
“Waterlust's support provides critical seed funding for us to rapidly develop and implement whale shark conservation projects in areas where this globally-endangered species is most at risk. This includes Mozambique, where our research and awareness work helped the government decide to fully protect whale sharks just a few weeks ago. We love working with a company that is so committed to making a positive change in the world.”

I’m used to bathing suits being a sensory nightmare, but holy cow this thing is perfect and beautiful!
I held off on getting one for like, a year. And when I was finally ready I really wanted the tiger shark print which was out of stock so I waited a while but decided to go with the whale shark print instead! I’m just glad I have this suit and can start diving with it! It’s PERFECT!
The fit is not too tight, not too loose. I was worried about the stitching but it is not even noticeable and seamless during wear!
Thanks y’all!
I can’t wait to take this suit snorkeling in Oahu!
Fit’s fantastic… going to order another one! thank you for all you do to help the planet.
I was pleasantly surprised when I tried on my sun suit. I was not expecting to love it on me! I do recommend sizing up, especially if you are bigger in the hips and butt, which is what I did. The arms are a little looser since I sized up, but I don’t mind it at all. Still a little snug on the bottom but definitely not too small. I also purchased the shorts and bra top (I did not size up in those) and all three pieces are great! I’m usually really uncomfortable in any swimwear and this suit makes me feel much more confident. I don’t normally do reviews but I think these products deserve one! I will definitely be purchasing another set in the future. 💙
Although the design is beautiful, it fits right everywhere except the neck! And I have a relatively thin neck! Which is a real shame because it’s just not functional. How can I freedive with something that feels like it’s chocking me? Since I’m leaving the country and can’t return it, it’ll just be a pretty suit to take photos on and not for the intended purpose (actual swimming and for the price, I’m gutted about that).
I have surf/sun suits from many other brands and never had this issue.
I previously bought the tiger shark sun suit and it has performed so well and I finally decided it’s time to get a second one to switch between and I’m so excited about the whale shark suit and I’m even happier to know it’s going to be great for swimming and diving this summer!
