Kelp Forest Best Day Ever Shorts

Educational resources & donation included with every purchase. Learn more.

When you’re ready for the best day ever and want a pair of shorts that are fun, supportive, and equally comfortable on land or in the water.

Kelps represent the largest species of algae in the world, with some, like the giant kelp, exceeding 100 feet (30 meters) in length. Giant kelp is also one of the fastest-growing organisms in the ocean, growing up to 2 ft per day! Gas-filled bladders beneath the kelp’s blades, called pneumatocysts, float the kelp towards the water’s surface, while the holdfasts keep them anchored in place, creating the iconic forest-like appearance. 5% of sales will be donated to the Smith Seaweed Ecology Lab at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography to support their work on kelp forest ecology and restoration.

Safe, premium performance yarns: Our high-quality, fully traceable yarns are sourced through sustainable partners in the U.S. These materials meet rigorous chemical safety standards and are independently verified for over 1,000 harmful substances like BPA and PFAS through OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification.

High-quality, responsible printing: Our products are printed using heat transfer sublimation, a printing technique that is widely considered to be the safest for both workers and the environment. It requires no water, eliminates dye from entering water systems, and minimizes ink and fabric waste. All the inks and dyes we use are also OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified.

Recycled materials, minimal waste: Our commitment to environmental responsibility starts with sustainable fibers and yarns. We use synthetic yarns made from recycled plastic bottles, which helps remove and repurpose existing plastic.

Advocate Apparel Inspired by Kelp Forests

Kelp forests can be found on over 1/3 of our planet’s coastlines and are home to thousands of marine species, including abalone, crabs, lobsters, fish, sharks, marine mammals, and sea birds. They support commercially and culturally important fisheries, protect coastlines from erosion, and support a large ecotourism industry.

Unfortunately, warming seas, loss of keystone species that keep kelp grazers in check, unsustainable fishing practices, and pollution are causing kelp forests to decline globally.

“Waterlust is helping to support critical student research in the Smith Lab on kelp forest ecology, human impacts, and the effects of global climate on these iconic ecosystems. This work is critical to the development of effective restoration and conservation efforts. We are excited to work with Waterlust to help share our knowledge of and passion for our ocean forests!”
