Restoring reef habitat through artificial reefs is essential because coral reefs are rapidly declining due to warming oceans, pollution, and coastal development. Artificial reefs provide new surfaces for corals and marine life to settle, helping rebuild biodiversity and strengthen coastal ecosystems. They also relieve pressure on natural reefs by creating additional habitat where it’s needed most.

Ocean Rescue Alliance International’s 1000 Mermaids Artificial Reef Project takes this restoration a step further by combining marine science with art. They deploy sculpted reef modules, many cast from real people, that are engineered to support coral growth and marine life, creating reef habitat and engaging communities.

The 1000 Mermaids Artificial Reef Project is a large-scale public art and marine conservation initiative. Ocean Rescue Alliance International combines ocean science, art, and community engagement by deploying artificial reef sculptures with the goal of reaching 1000 mermaids that not only serve as living art installations but also provide vital habitat for marine life. Each sculpture is designed from marine-safe materials that encourage coral attachment and reef growth, transforming barren sea bottoms into thriving ecosystems.
