Known for their show stopping appearance, venomous spines, and voracious appetites, invasive Indo-Pacific lionfish (Pterois volitans & Pterois miles) are the first non-native marine fish to become established in the Atlantic. Lionfish pose a significant threat to local marine ecosystems due to widespread predation of native species, prolific reproduction, and lack of controlling predators.

Advocate Apparel Inspired by the Indo-Pacific lionfish (Pterois volitans & Pterois miles)

Lionfish in their native range, from the South Pacific to the Red Sea, are an important part of the coral reef ecosystem and population numbers are kept in check through natural processes.

However, they are non-native to the Atlantic ocean and have become established as a harmful invasive species in this region, posing a significant threat to local marine ecosystems due to widespread predation on native species, prolific reproduction, and lack of controlling predators. Humans must intervene to reduce their impact in the invaded waters, and our Invasive Lionfish collection exists to promote action and awareness on this issue.

Beginning in the 1980s, two visually identical species of lionfish (Pterois miles and Pterois volitans) were introduced into the Atlantic via the US aquarium trade and have become the first non-native marine fish to become established in the Atlantic. Over the past decade, invasive lionfish densities in these non-native areas have exploded, as they have been documented along the entire US East Coast from Florida through Massachusetts, east to Bermuda, and south throughout the Caribbean. The expansion has been extremely rapid and exponential in scope.

Great shorts. Order small.

First, I love these. I love that there's no liner so I can wear my own boxers with them. I love the way they look. I love that they have a zipper pocket. I love them.

I will advise: these are very accurately/true to size. I measured my waist at 37 inches and ordered a 35 and they fit really well... However, the size you order is the *tightest* they will go. There are a couple inches of "wiggle room" in the tie and some days, these are just a hair too big for me and I have to keep pulling them up. Especially if I have my phone in the pocket.

I wore them all week on vacation regardless so I won't be returning/exchanging but next time, I will size down for the extra adjustment room.

Board shorts

I love the concept, look, feel, & fit. My only complaint is that they don’t breathe. Not sure that is fixable with recycled plastic.

Great board shorts- terrific father's day gift

The pattern is fantastic and the material is high quality - soft, smooth, and sturdy. Fits great. Not so sure about the button - some loose threads that needed to be snipped and buttoning seems slightly awkward. Am used to velcro fly but definitely wouldn't want to take a chance of snagging these and they are comfortable. Despite that minor detail, these are replacing an old flimsy and faded pair and expect to get many years of paddling and swimming in the ocean with these! (My wife did notice that the pair the model has on has a white paracord tie?)

Splendid

As a diver, lover of marine life, and person who has often found men's trunks/shorts offerings underwhelming, I was pleased to find Waterlust. As a frenemy of the invasive lionfish, I ordered these given my interest in the fish and the brazen yet restrained pattern, coloring. And the quality is sound. Hopefully, Waterlust thrives.

Beautiful Print

My husband has had the whale shark print for a couple of years and loves them. We were so excited when the lion fish print became available. It’s a really cool design.

Great shorts

The board shorts are light weight without being flimsy. Very comfy. The wide waist band conforms well and is easily adjustable wirh the drawstring. Good length without extra fabric at the knees. Wore them kayaking Sat and biking Sunday over a pair of bike shorts. They allow good air circulation so they dry fast. By not relying on elastic in the waistband for fit, I hope they will still work well for years after the elastic in baggies is shot.
