The coral reef ecosystems that cover our globe provide essential food and habitat to over 25% of all marine life. The parrotfish is a common animal found among these ecosystems and are a crucial keystone species, responsible for cleaning the corals from harmful algae. The abundance of parrotfish can be related directly to the health of our coral reef ecosystems.

Advocate Apparel Inspired by the spotted parrotfish (cetoscarus ocellatus)

While parrotfish come in many amazing colors and patterns, this print is inspired by a male, terminal phase spotted parrotfish, native to the Indo-Pacific. Considered the most effective reef grazer, parrotfish serve an important function in maintaining the health of coral reefs. In fact, a 2014 IUCN report surveyed the health of Caribbean coral reefs from 1970-2012 and found that one of the most impactful actions we can take to restore the health of coral reef habitat is to protect parrotfish!

If that isn’t reason enough to love these bright and beautiful fish, an individual poops up to 200 lbs of sand a year, a critical source of sediment for beaches! For example, in Vakkaru Island in the Maldives, a 2015 study found that over 85% of their beach sand had been produced by parrotfish!

LOVE this suit

I was skeptical that there were so many five star reviews for this suit, but now that I've tried it on, I love it, too! I was on the fence between 2x and 3x (I'm about 5'11, wear a size 18 in most things), but I went with the 3x mostly because of my height. I wanted more torso room and figured having the larger size would allow more space to be allocated lengthwise as well. It's just about perfect in size. I was pleasantly surprised that the sleeves were long enough. I was concerned about it covering my not-small rear end well enough, but it seems to be just fine.

The only tiny tweak I would make if I could is to make the pull string for the zipper a few inches longer. Maybe it's because my arms are long, or maybe there's some magical technique I haven't learned yet, but when I grab the very end of the pull string and try to bend my elbow underneath it to pull the string up behind me, my forearm/wrist is just a touch too long and I can't get it in there. I might just sew a little extension onto the end so that's not an issue anymore.

Would definitely buy again, and in fact, I'm considering buying the full body version.

Ah-MAZING!

The fit and feel is perfect! Very comfortable, sturdy and pretty. I like how the arms are not too tight. The only thing I’d change is a green zipper instead of white, but it’s a personal preference, nothing major. I will definitely be getting another pair in a different pattern and have already told a lot of my friends how good they are!

Fully protected

I’m loving my parrotfish sunsuit. I’m wearing it with my whale shark leggings on the beach - it was warm enough for my freediving session (so no need to squeeze into someone else’s wetsuit) and I’m not having to think about the state of my sun screen or whether I’m burning - which is a constant issue with me. I’m covered and fully confident. I love it!

Quality control, high postage costs & delayed delivery

Received my parrot fish suit and leggings one month after purchasing (postage costing $100). I live in Australia and the pandemic is still being used as the reason for the delay. My purchase arrived in time for an Indonesian holiday however the sleeve on the suit has a 6 inch/15cm split along the seam. I guess it’ll be two months before the suit can be exchanged now Christmas is upon us. Apart from the postage price, delivery time and absence of quality control, the suit print, fit, style and fabric are of an excellent standard. Disappointed? Yes I am.

Hi Jude!
SO sorry to hear about the quality issues in your new sun suit, I know that must have been so disappointing. It is disappointing for us to hear as well as this is not up to our own standards. We will be sending you a new suit via FedEx (which can be more reliable than USPS). We wish we could decrease the cost for international shipping, but, unfortunately, those prices are set by the shipping couriers and not internally here at Waterlust.
Thanks so much for providing your feedback. Hopefully you are able to get the other sun suit mended and find it a good home! Please email us if you have any further questions or concerns.
