Known for the psychedelic patterns found on their inner shells, abalone (sea snails) feature unique colors that are created by nacre, hexagonal platelets of aragonite also known commonly as “mother of pearl” and found on a variety of mollusks. Our print features the piercing blues of New Zealand’s Pāua, the Māori name given to three species Haliotis iris, Haliotis australis and Haliotis virginea.

Abalone is the common name for a variety of marine snails that are found throughout the world’s oceans. Sought after for their meat and their beautiful shells, populations have declined rapidly and some species are now critically endangered.
Growing juvenile abalone. Once they reach adulthood, they’ll be released into the wild along southern California’s coast.
High school student divers trained by Nancy to participate in the abalone restoration efforts.
The next generation of scientists measuring abalone in their classroom nursery.
Our relationship with abalone illustrates the challenges of overexploitation of the marine environment. Until the 1980s, it was widely thought that abalone populations were resilient and could effectively rebound from harvesting activities. Unfortunately, that has not proven to be true.
Abalone are “broadcast spawners,” meaning that two individuals must be within three feet of one another to sexually reproduce. This type of reproduction makes population recovery very challenging, driving the need for humans to intervene.
Get Inspired is a non-profit organization that specializes in marine conservation & education, founded by Marine Biologist Nancy Caruso. Besides physically growing juvenile abalone along California’s coast and populating them back into the coastal kelp forest marine habitat, Nancy recognizes that protecting the ocean in the future requires educating children today. That is why she has launched a 10-year initiative to grow 100,000 abalone in classrooms across the golden state and restore them along the southern California coast, inspiring and utilizing the help of the next generation of scientists along the way. 10% of profits from your purchase will be donated to this restoration effort.
“Our partnership with Waterlust helps us spread our message of conservation across the globe far beyond our reach. It is a great example of how one small organization with one employee can only do so much but by working together we can do more, reach more, spreading knowledge, happiness, beauty, and hopefully compassion for our ocean animals.”

I'm such a fan of these 4 inch shorts (and matching top), and always get compliments when I wear them. Nice fit. Love the pockets. I have another set of Waterlust swimwear, but I just couldn't resist the abalone design. Waterlust is the best.
The shorts feel and fit great. I love the pocket too. But the waistband rolls down as soon as I bend over and the shorts roll up a bit too. I feel like I’m always adjusting things. I really wanted to like them!
Hi Hanae,
Thank you for sharing this feedback. We have found that going up one size usually takes care of the rolling problem for both the waistband and the legs. I would be happy to set up an exchange up for you if you would like to try! You can send us an email at hello@waterlust.com to get this exchange/return set up.
Thanks again for taking the time to share this feedback with us!
Best,
Camilla and the Waterlust Team
Love these for swimming and just hanging out. Super comfortable and the pockets are clutch. Abalone pattern is gorgeous and goes with a variety of colors for tops. Excited to see solid black—please make these in other solids!
My Abalone top, shorts and scrunchie arrived and squeeee! they are beautiful! The fit is perfect (size guides are sooo helpful!), the fabric is silky, cut to flatter, and the detail and iridescence is mesmerizing.
Thank you!
🙏🙏🙏
These shorts are absolutely gorgeous, I have the leggings already in this print and was so excited to get the shorts. I received the shorts and have to say that the sizing discrepancies in my last two purchases have been very disappointing. I have 3 leggings and 1 pair of 4” shorts from years ago that fit perfectly, all size medium. I ordered a pair tiger shark 4” shorts at Christmas in a size medium and they were significantly smaller than my older pair. Then I ordered these abalone shorts, also in size medium and just recieved them and they are even smaller than the ones I got at Christmas. I’m not sure if you have changed your sizing in the last year, but the newer ones are definitely no where close to the same sizing as previous years. I have put in for an exchange already. I will say that your customer service has always been top notch and I adore your company and your causes. I’ve attached photos showing my older cosmic coral shorts on the bottom, then the tiger shark shorts on top of that and the newest abalone shorts on the very top to show the sizing differences.
