Stony corals are essential reef-builders that form the foundation and framework for coral reef ecosystems. They do this by using calcium and carbonate ions in seawater to create limestone skeletons like the one this print is inspired by. These structures are home to some of the most biologically diverse habitats on Earth and help protect coastal communities from storms and hurricanes.

Advocate Apparel Inspired by Coral Reefs

Coral reefs are critical underwater ecosystems that host and support a dazzling array of marine life and play a vital role in protecting coastlines from erosion, supporting fisheries, and driving tourism. These vibrant and biodiverse habitats are essential for maintaining the health of our oceans and sustaining both marine and human communities. Protecting coral reefs is key to safeguarding the balance of life in our oceans and ensuring a sustainable future.

The most significant problem facing coral reefs is black and white: climate change.

Climate change is exerting devastating impacts on coral reefs, primarily through rising sea temperatures and ocean acidification. Elevated sea temperatures lead to coral bleaching, where corals expel their symbiotic algae, causing them to lose their vibrant colors and leaving the corals weak and susceptible to diseases. Additionally, increased atmospheric carbon dioxide levels are driving ocean acidification, which hinders the ability of corals to build their calcium carbonate skeletons. These combined stressors make corals more susceptible to diseases and hinder their ability to recover from physical damage, posing a significant threat to these vital marine ecosystems and the rich biodiversity they support.
