Characteristic spots and stripes adorn the largest fish in the sea forming an intricate pattern, like a warrior painted for battle. Scientists use these distinctive markings to identify individual whale sharks. Like a fingerprint, each is as unique and special as the last.

Advocate Apparel Inspired by the largest fish in the sea, the whale shark (Rhincodon typus)

Whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) are fish, not whales - allowing them to hold the esteemed title of "largest fish in the sea" (since sharks are fish too!). These charismatic creatures can reach lengths of 12 meters (40 feet) or more! Despite their large size, they feed on some of the smallest organisms in the sea, plankton. Hanging vertically in the water column they're able to suction feed and filter these tiny organisms through their gill rakers much like a giant vacuum cleaner pulls dust and dirt from a kitchen floor, filtering the fragments into its chamber within.

Unfortunately, approximately 100 million sharks are killed every year by humans, through direct targeted fishing efforts as well as unintended bycatch from other fisheries. The whale shark is one species of shark that is particularly vulnerable to this commercial fishing due to their high value in international trade, in addition to their highly migratory nature and normally low abundance. Research into the lives of these gentle giants can help us to manage their populations and keep these magnificent fish in the ocean where they belong.

“Waterlust's support provides critical seed funding for us to rapidly develop and implement whale shark conservation projects in areas where this globally-endangered species is most at risk. This includes Mozambique, where our research and awareness work helped the government decide to fully protect whale sharks just a few weeks ago. We love working with a company that is so committed to making a positive change in the world.”

After 13 Months

This is my second sunsuit from Waterlust and BOY do I love the pattern! My first suit (Same one but in the Abalone print) has lasted more than 3 years with out going see through!
I swim a lot in the summer and demand a lot from my suits, so I'd been so pleased to find one that held up so well! Unfortunately the Whale shark suit did not keep its elasticity as well as the Abalone. In a year the wonderfully snug suit lost its elasticity almost completely. I'm still using it, but this one broke down so much faster than the first. The sleeves now billow around my arms and hands, and the whole suit from neck to crotch has 'lengthened'. To the companies credit, neither suit is see through yet though!
I am disappointed that the elastic gave out so quickly compared to my abalone suit, but given I swim so much I still think these suits are some of the best out there for water sport.

Whale shark suit was great in cold water swim

I wore my whaleshark suit at my midwinter ocean swim in (in New Zealand) in 15 degrees water and swam for 52 minutes! I did get cold but it kept me a lot more insulated than a normal swimsuit!

Great fit and super quality

I was nervous - it’s virtually IMPOSSIBLE to find good swimwear for fully plus sized people. But it was love at first zip! The fit is great and sizing totally appreciated, the pattern is beautiful, and it’s a blessing to know the company is devoted to marine ethics. Love it.
