Waterlust began as an experimental project by ocean science graduate students at the University of Miami’s Rosensteil School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. Unsatisfied with the conventional methods of sharing scientific findings with the world, our early days were spent learning how to use online media to engage the public with marine science in an entertaining, fun and informative way.

We believe film and photography are great mediums in which to transfer information, express ideas and create feelings and emotional responses.

Our YouTube videos and photography cover a wide range of topics from marine and freshwater science to water-based sport and adventure, all with an underlying purpose: to inspire a love for our watery world and to teach the science behind it.

Media was a great start, and having people “like” and “share” our photos and videos across the interwebs inspired us to keep thinking. How could we bring science and a love for our watery world into more peoples lives? As much as our videos and photos were reaching millions of people, those digital interactions were fleeting. We felt that there was more we could do! Early in 2015 we realized that with apparel, we could bring our stories of science into something that people could wear, and that every time they did, they would be empowered with the opportunity to be an advocate. Our clothing would have to be creative, well-designed, and most importantly built to endure abuse from the elements using the most environmentally responsible materials and processes possible. Through all stages of our design and manufacturing, our commitment to environmental responsibility remains at the forefront of all that we do- from concept, through to final packaging. And besides serving a functional purpose, we wanted our gear to support the marine science research and education organizations that we champion. We called the strategy “advocate apparel.”

From a small graduate student run passion project, Waterlust has now grown to be a purpose-driven brand that creates: 1) environmentally responsible products to support marine science research and education, and 2) media to inspire scientific curiosity and an adventurous spirit.

Forging this path has been an exhilarating and challenging adventure. We've learned a lot along the way and plan to continue this pursuit of knowledge - pushing boundaries, exploring new routes and reaching to be the best we can be in all aspects of our business and life. Hop on, it's going to be a wild ride.
