Lionfish Suit Review

After recently having a biopsy come back with a mild atypical result..I am even more careful about skin safety and decided to purchase a long sleeve suit. (My next purchase will be the leggings!)

I enjoy swimming, paddleboarding, beach bumming and all things outdoors. I searched many websites looking for certified gear that met my stylish needs.

Finding Waterlust excited me because not only did I see I would get a great product, but also that my purchase supports a great initiative with many creative people.

The material feels great, matches the skin care foundation requirements for sun protective clothing and certified within Australian guidelines.

The fit is great for me... I am 5'8 150 lbs, long torso, long legs/arms, bottom heavy with small chest. I did have to manipulate the behind part, as my booty is big. But it fits perfect and swims great!!!

This suit is swim lap training friendly, keeps you cool in the Florida sun, very comfortable for several hours, stylish, easy to zip up.

I can't wait to buy some leggings and see future suit designs.

Thank you Waterlust!

Love my Lionfish

I bought the sunsuit for sun protection while doing longer open water swims in Noosa, Australia. It is absolutely brilliant for protection (especially from sea lice) and completely comfortable. I have had many people enquire about it so it's a great talking point at the beach.

2 in the family now have this design!

My daughter first chose the design as we were picking training suits for pre summer swimming (we are a camp lifeguard family and divers). I fell in love. It has everything we look for down to thumb holes. The stitching and fabric is awesome. I went down a size from my last order. I’m basically the 2x now and wear a size 16/18 at 6’ tall. My 6’2” daughter wears large and she’s a 10/12. Arms are perfect length which is a hard find. Shortest daughter wears the extra small. She’s 5’6” and barely 120. Basically what I’m saying is any size, any design you can’t go wrong. We now own 4 sunsuits, 1 short and 1 legging as a family. (Oh and two tank tops).

Known for their show stopping appearance, venomous spines, and voracious appetites, invasive Indo-Pacific lionfish (Pterois volitans & Pterois miles) are the first non-native marine fish to become established in the Atlantic. Lionfish pose a significant threat to local marine ecosystems due to widespread predation of native species, prolific reproduction, and lack of controlling predators.

    6. Back zipper for easy entry, with a long paracord pull for easy zip up

ADVOCATE APPAREL INSPIRED BY the invasive lionfish (Pterois volitans & Pterois miles)

The issue

Lionfish in their native range, from the South Pacific to the Red Sea, are an important part of the coral reef ecosystem and population numbers are kept in check through natural processes.

However, they are non-native to the Atlantic ocean and have become established as a harmful invasive species in this region, posing a significant threat to local marine ecosystems due to widespread predation on native species, prolific reproduction, and lack of controlling predators. Humans must intervene to reduce their impact in the invaded waters, and our Invasive Lionfish collection exists to promote action and awareness on this issue.

Reported Lionfish Sightings 1985 - January 8, 2020

Beginning in the 1980's, two visually identical species of lionfish (Pterois miles and Pterois volitans) were introduced into the Atlantic via the US aquarium trade and have become the first non-native marine fish to become established in the Atlantic. Over the past decade, invasive lionfish densities in these non-native areas have exploded, as they have been documented along the entire US East Coast from Florida through Massachusetts, east to Bermuda and south throughout the Caribbean. The expansion has been extremely rapid and exponential in scope.

Reef Environmental Education Foundation REEF Logo

Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF)’s Invasive Species Program has been at the forefront of the lionfish invasion since the arrival of the species in Florida in 2006, and 10% of profits from your purchase goes to this program. REEF’s efforts have included laying the groundwork for developing early detection and rapid response plans to mitigate the impacts, training resource managers and dive operators in effective collecting techniques, and conducting innovative research to better understand what has made Indo-Pacific lionfish the perfect invader.

REEF was founded in 1990 out of growing concern about the health of the marine environment, and the desire to provide the public ways to contribute to the understanding and protection of marine populations. Visit www.REEF.org to learn more.
